MOG 2000 ADVENTURE
PAGE 6Those of us from outside the UK who drive Morgans have at times been called "eccentric", (particularly those who ship their car 3000 miles for a Mog!). English Morganeers are best described as "fun loving". They are mostly professionals who are tired of driving a coupe to work five days a week, and just want to let it all out in their Morgans. They NEVER put the top up.
Thursday night brought on the first party, a noggin in the college pub. A small group of early arrivers gathered for an overdue discussion of the proper beer for Morganeering. While in the states the chief conversation would be carburetors versus fuel injection, the conversation here was all about the ongoing England vs. West Indies cricket match. The object of a cricket match, as I came to understand it, is to have a four or five day outdoor beer bash in white clothes. One must try to imagine a 50 hour baseball game spread over 5 days where one smiles blandly and taps one's hands together at the exciting moments murmuring "Here, here" and "well done" very quietly. It is the best thing on British TV.
DAY 9
Squeaky needed a little attention, her vital fluids were fine and she hadn’t used a drop of oil, but a cleaning was due. In the afternoon we took the bus into Canterbury. Like so many pilgrims before, we roamed the memorable city where Christianity first came to this island, and where Chaucer’s band of travelers journeyed. In the center of the old city is the Canterbury Cathedral. Built in 1070, and enlarged and rebuilt many times, its towering structure dominates the valley. Inside on the place were he died, there is a shrine to Thomas Becket.
That evening was the first real event of Mog 2000, a noggin. Hundreds of people turned up at the college pub for a sip, and some "bangers and
mash" (sausages and mashed potatoes). Everyone seemed to celebrating England’s two-day victory in the cricket match. This was very confusing, because, by my count they lost out on three days of partying in the five day match, but, apparently, it had been so long since they beat the West Indies team that a two- day victory was worth celebrating.
