Wanted:Morgan plus four parts

Postby nico balder on Mon Aug 10, 2009 1:57 am

For my incomplete 1963 plus four I'm looking for a Moss gearbox or only
the bell-housing,a steering colum, LHD steeringbox and engine front cover plate
to support the engine in the frame.

Nicco -

I have a spare gearbox, bellhousing, and possibly the steering column, from my '62 +4. The spares are from a good running car. They are available because I am converting to a 5-speed and Gemmer steering.

Pictures are available. Prices - ? I have no idea what the items are worth. They will be priced fairly to the market. Shipping the gearbox overseas would be expensive because of its weight.

cheers

Hello Bruce,

Thank you for your email and your offer. Yes,I am very interested in
these parts.
There are 2 different Moss-boxes for plus four Morgans.
A low ratio and a high-ratio box. If your 62 plus four has it's original
gearbox it should be a high ratio.
It is not very important to me, but I would like to know.
It would be nice to see some pictures and to know something about
the amount of money you want for these items.
I know nothing about shipping-costs,if you do,please let me know.
In which part of the US do you live?
I have a friend in the UK who buys cars and motorcycles in the US around
Detriot and send them to the UK in a container.I think he will help me to
get these parts to Europe.
Well, thank you again for the offer, hope to see some pictures and to hear
from you soon.

Kind regards Nico Balder

Nico -

Photos of the transmission and bellhousing are at URL's listed below. Note in the 'under' shot of the bellhousing the widening of the clutch actuator slot - that's probably wear, though we never had a driving issue with the car. It's a '62 model, we've had it 35 years, it has about 70,000 miles on it. I'm redoing the car for dry rot in the wood, and to update mechanical gear [installing a five speed, etc.].

I also have a new throwout bearing that is available, and the clutch linkages.

It would be no problem to ship to Detroit for containerization. The bellhousing is light, the trans is heavy.

Per the pricing at New England Motors [ http://www.morgan-spares.com/], a new bellhousing is $1250US, rebuilt is $650US. A new throwout bearing with carbon is $150US. They list the Moss trans at $2500US rebuilt - mine is working fine but not rebuilt. A new input shaft with muff coupling is $650 [Let me know if you need the input shaft or not].

I will hunt around for typical used pricing - do the same on your end, and we'll make a deal.

A friend who is doing a Model T Ford has my steering box - if it fits, he wants it. Reference the many comments on Gemmer steering boxes as an improvement over original, if he wants the old one maybe you could find a Gemmer.

cheers
Bruce

hello Bruce,

Thank you for responding so soon.
Yes,I also need the input shaft. Actually,I need all the parts who are attached
in,on or near the gearbox.
I want to make my car as original as possible.
To be honest, a 5-speed gearbox and a Gemmer will not increase the value of
your car. (but that is what I think) Maybe you don't care about value.
Pictures from gearbox and bellhousing look good, but does'nt say anything about
their good working order.
That is a bit of a problem, because when I buy parts in the Netherlands or the UK
I can see them, feel them and smell them and then decide to buy them or not.
This time I just have to pay real money and the only thing I can do is waiting till
the items arrive and hope they are as described.I hope you understand that I am worried
about that.
I hope the steeringbox does not fit the T-Ford, but I understand I have to wait till your
friend say yes or no.
Let me know if your hunt for typical used pricing is finished and give some numbers
with not to many zeros.
Have a nice weekend.

Kind regards Nico

Nico -

You are correct, the changes won't raise the value of the car. But since it isn't [ever] for sale, the value is moot. I am simply making it a better, more drivable, Morgan. My two sons are working out the details of how to share the car after our passing [!!].

Many years ago I chatted with Alf Francis, an old Brit race car guy, and suggested replacing the Mog drivetrain with a two-liter Alfa drivetrain. My argument was that the Alfa was a design contemporary, was lighter, and had better specs. He was appalled that I would desecrate a Morgan that way...then after talking to a Morgan racer, he called back about a month later and said that was actually a really good combination. For this car I am sticking with TR3, but who knows - I may get another some day [so the sons won't have to share].

You will probably want the driveshaft from gearbox to differential as well, and perhaps the pressure plate.

Condition - the whole car, gearbox and all, was working fine when I started disassembly. The reason for taking the car apart is that some of the wood was literally crumbling to dust. That said - if I weren't installing a new components, I would certainly have rebuilt the gearbox and steering box while they are out of the car. There are shops here that can do it, and surely competent shops near you. I leave that to you.

Chores for now, holiday tomorrow, I will search for fair pricing.

cheers
Bruce
